There are two ways to advertise on Instagram: the Boost button under a post and Meta Ads Manager. The first is quick and usually burns money, because targeting, placement and objective options are limited. The second takes half an hour to learn and shows where every lira goes. This article covers the second.
What you need before starting
- The Instagram account switched to a business or creator account.
- A Facebook page (Instagram ads run on Meta’s infrastructure tied to a page).
- A Meta Business account with an ad account inside it; payment method set.
- Meta Pixel or Conversions API installed on your site — without it you will never see “how many people submitted the form”. On Sufitware sites this is installed subject to cookie consent.
Your first campaign, step by step
- 01Pick an objective. Traffic (clicks to site), engagement, leads (form), sales. For a small business the most honest start is usually leads or traffic; “reach” and “awareness” objectives show numbers but not sales.
- 02Audience. Location (district or city, with radius), age, interests. Do not narrow too much in the first campaign; Meta needs volume to learn. A lookalike from your customer list or site visitors is the second campaign’s job.
- 03Placements. Start with Instagram feed + Reels + stories only; “Advantage+ placements” spreads budget to Facebook and Audience Network.
- 04Budget and duration. Daily budget, at least 7 days. The first three days are the “learning” phase; editing the ad then resets the counter.
- 05Creative. Vertical (9:16 or 4:5), product in the first two seconds, captions, one call to action. What to shoot is in how to make an ad video.
- 06Copy. The first line must carry the whole message; the “more” cut comes on line two. One promise, one call.
- 07Landing page. The ad should go to the page or form for that offer, not the homepage. A page that takes more than three seconds on a phone throws the ad money away.
Do not scale before measuring
Three numbers to watch: cost per result (what a form/click cost), click-through rate (is the creative working), conversion on the landing page (is the page working). Clicks but no forms means the problem is the page, not the ad. At the end of week one keep the best creative and turn off the other; raise budget only if cost per result is acceptable.
Common mistakes
- Starting with Boost and being unable to measure.
- Advertising without the Pixel.
- Opening five campaigns to five audiences at once and leaving none of them room to learn.
- Sending the ad to the homepage.
- Declaring “it doesn’t work” on day three and switching off.
- Leaving comments unanswered; comments under an ad are a sales channel too.
How it differs from Google ads
Instagram ads work on interest: the person is not searching, you are showing. Google ads work on intent: the person types “dentist Kadıköy”. Google leads for urgent-need services, Instagram for visual and discovery products; see advertising on Google for the other side.
Sufitware’s social media ads service runs setup, creative production and weekly measurement together. Write your offer in one sentence in the brief form and we will tell you which objective and audience to start with.
