Short answer: free. Google does not charge for a map listing; intermediaries offering “paid listing” are selling the five-minute job you can do yourself. The map listing is part of the Google Business Profile; for the whole profile (category, photos, review management) see how to open a Google Business Profile. This article covers only the map side.
Adding in five steps
- 01Sign in at business.google.com with a Google account that belongs to the business.
- 02Enter the business name as it appears on the sign; choose a category.
- 03Answer yes to “Do you have a location customers can visit?”; enter the address and drag the pin manually onto the building. Even with a correct address text, the pin can auto-drop on the wrong street.
- 04Phone and website.
- 05Verification: a code by post, phone, email or video — Google decides which is offered. Until verified, the map listing is not fully visible to everyone.
“My business is already on the map”
Most businesses are on the map before they open one: customers or Google’s data sources may have created it. Do not create a new listing. Find the business on the map → “Own this business?” → claim ownership. A new listing creates two profiles and weakens both.
Why the pin lands in the wrong place
- Address text and pin are independent; the pin was never corrected.
- New development or renumbered street; Google’s map lags behind.
- Businesses inside malls and arcades get the pin at the main entrance; write “floor/unit” in the address line.
- A customer submitted a “location edit” suggestion and Google accepted it; correct it back from the profile.
Service-area businesses
Businesses that do not receive customers (home-based, mobile services) hide the address and define a service area; the map shows an area instead of a pin. Hiding the address while still showing an exact pin is not possible; that is by design.
Ranking higher on the map
A listing is not visibility. What affects ranking: the correct primary category, a complete and current profile, review count and reply rate, photos, and the website’s address/phone matching the profile exactly. That list is in Google Business Profile; the paid option is in advertising on Google.
Sufitware’s SEO and Google Business service handles the map listing, category selection and site matching together. If you opened the profile yourself, paste its address into the brief form and we will say what is missing.
